Quick Recap: South Africa vs Netherlands

Rain shortened the match to 43 overs per side, and the Netherlands came back from being 82-5 while batting first to make 245-8. The Proteas were bowled out for 207 in the penultimate over after being reduced to 44-4 and then 145-7, with top scorer David Miller falling victim to Logan van Beek’s spell of 3-60.

The 38-run margin of victory represents the Netherlands’ first ODI World Cup victory since defeating Scotland in St. Kitts & Nevis in 2007.

Netherlands: The Road to Their Finest Win

It was a disappointing day for Temba Bavuma and South Africa as they lost to the Dutch twice, with the Dutch pulling off another major upset victory over the Proteas at a World Cup.

After the Netherlands stunned South Africa with a win in Adelaide in November, sending them home from the Twenty20 World Cup, they did the same thing on Tuesday in Dharamshala, losing the 50-over version of the tournament.

The loss dealt a major blow to South Africa’s prospects of advancing to the knockout stages, making Saturday’s match against England in Mumbai all the more crucial.

Although the Netherlands qualified for the tournament by defeating the West Indies, the South African team they just beat is widely expected to do well in India.

An Impressive Display from the Netherlands

The Dutch were down and out at 50-4 and 112-6 before captain Edwards came to their rescue. The Netherlands scored 245-8 thanks in large part to his undefeated 78 off 69 balls and the contributions of Roelof van der Merwe and Aryan Dutt.

After promising starts, Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Rassie van der Dussen all fell within a span of 21 deliveries. All four players had scored hundreds in victories over Sri Lanka and Australia.

After falling from a 36-0 lead to a 44-4 deficit, Heinrich Klaasen and Miller steadied the ship with a run-a-ball 45. Klaasen’s expulsion, however, put all of South Africa’s faith in Miller.

Miller was dismissed for 43 after being hit on the off-side by an off-pace Jaffa from the dangerous Van Beek after he had been down on 23 in the deep.

With South Africa all out for 207, Van Beek took out Keshav Maharaj in the final over, while Bas de Leede, who had bowled a steepler to save Miller, made amends by eliminating Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada.

The Dutch won their first ODI World Cup in 16 years with a fantastic team bowling performance. Van Beek took 3-60, Van der Merwe got 2, and Paul van Meekeren got 1.

The Captain Couldn’t Be More Proud

After stunning South Africa on Tuesday, Netherlands captain Edwards was happy with his squad and noted that reaching the World Cup semifinals was a goal going into the competition.

A year after defeating the Proteas in the T20 World Cup, the lone non-Test playing nation in the event pulled off a stunning shock, winning a memorable triumph against the previously undefeated South Africa.

Edwards showed the way with an unbeaten 78 that kept his team in the game despite a top-order collapse for the Dutch, allowing them to set a total that was insurmountable for South Africa.

Player of the Match: Scott Edwards

After growing up in Blackburn, a suburb of Melbourne, and playing club cricket for Richmond, now 27-year-old Scott Edwards, who now resides in the Netherlands, played an epic captain’s knock, smashing 78 off 69 balls while batting at No.7, as the Dutch collapsed the Proteas and won their first ever World Cup game against a Test-playing country.

Dutch fast bowler Logan Van Beek described him as “the guy you just want to adhere to” after seeing him score an average of over 42 since becoming captain in 2022 following Pieter Seelaar’s retirement.
