A Quick History of the Pakistan Super League

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the PSL in September 2015. Warmed up for three years as PSL brand ambassadors, former Pakistani national team leaders Wasim Akram and Rameez Raja will promote the cricket competition.

The league finally took flight in the UAE on February 4, 2016, after much planning and two earlier failed attempts. At the head of the launching event was Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, minister of sports.

In the first two seasons of the league, five teams competed, one from each of Pakistan's provinces and one from the nation's capital. There were more foreign players in the first season of the PSL. Present at the occasion in Lahore on September 20, 2015, were 3Di, along with other Pakistani celebrities and current and former players, unveiled the official logo of the PSL.

For $93 million spread out over 10 years, the original franchisees' commercial rights were sold in December 2015. In 2017, PSL's market worth surpassed $300 million, according to research by Arif Habib. Since then, it has grown substantially.

The PSL Format

The format of the PSL is a double round robin. The top four teams in each group go on to the playoffs after playing each other twice. Similar to the Indian Premier League, the playoffs use the Page playoff system.

Although the league follows all of the rules and regulations set out by the International Cricket Council, it was the first to use the DRS system for Twenty20s, a technique that the ICC later embraced.

Preliminary

In the preliminary round, a victory earns you two points, a draw gets you one, and a loss gets you none. When both teams have used all their allotted number of overs and the score is still tied, the match goes into a super over to choose a winner.

Group

Various criteria, such as the highest point total, are used to rank the teams in the group stage. When deciding who comes out on top, other factors like run rate, win percentage, loss percentage, etc. are taken into account as well.

Play-off

When a play-off match reaches a deadlock, the winner is determined by a superover. If the super over doesn't come to fruition or if the over ends in a draw, the winner is the team that had the best league ranking as the regular season came to a close.

The Teams and Cities of the PSL

Islamabad United (Islamabad)

One of the original five teams in PSL is Islamabad United (IU). With more championships than any other team in the league, it easily qualifies as the best. Having won the championship in both the first and third seasons, it now has two titles to its name. At 57.95%, they have the second-highest victory percentage.

Karachi Kings (Karachi)

After ARY Media Group paid $26 million to acquire the Karachi Kings, the team became the league's second most costly. With 42.68%, it has the fourth-highest victory percentage. In both the second and third seasons of the PSL, it finished in third place.

Lahore Qalandars (Lahore)

With a ten-year sale price of $25.1 million, Lahore Qalandars (LQ) ranks as the third most costly franchise. Among the few teams sold to a global corporation, this one stands out. Over the past four PSL seasons, LQ has placed dead last in the standings. It has a victory rate of 30.55 percent. With 36 matches under their belt, they've managed 10 wins and 24 losses.

Multan Sultans (Multan)

One of the newest teams in the league, Multan Sultans (Multan), joined in 2018. Sold for $41.6 million under an 8-year contract, it is the league's priciest franchise. A victory rate of 36.84% is achieved. After 20 matches, its record was 7 wins and 12 losses. Its top wicket-taker is Junaid Khan, and its top run-scorer is Shoaib Malik.

Peshawar Zalmi (Peshawar)

After 20 overs in the second season of the PSL, Peshawar Zalmi emerged victorious. As a result of defeating Quetta Gladiators, it scored 58 runs. Their top scorer, Kamran "Pocket Rocket" Akmal, was named tournament MVP the same year.

Quetta Gladiators (Quetta)

The fourth-season Quetta Gladiators (Quetta) side finished first in their league with 17.5 overs. They outscored Peshawar Zalmi by 8 wickets to claim victory. In that same year, their player Shane Watson was named tournament MVP. Their winning percentage is 61.90 percent. There have been 43 matches played so far, with 26 victories and 16 defeats.
