Left-arm bowler Shoriful Islam bowled Reeza Hendricks, while spinner Mehidy Hasan trapped Rassie van der Dussen (one) lbw to give Bangladesh a good early start. South Africa Keeping the Momentum
De Kock scored his third century in as many games in this event, guiding his team to a formidable total with partnerships of 131 and 142 with Markram and Klaasen, respectively.
Markram reached his tenth ODI fifty with a four-hit past point off Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1-44), one of seven fours he hit in his innings. Klaasen continued his remarkable form by reaching his half-century in only 34 balls, hitting eight sixes and two fours.
De Kock’s brilliant performance came to an end when he slashed a full ball from Mahmud to deep backward point, where Nasum Ahmed took a simple catch. The audience at Wankhede Stadium, his former IPL home ground, gave the South African opener a standing ovation as he left the field.
Klaasen appeared disappointed after missing out on back-to-back tons by ten runs when he attempted to hit a slower bouncer from Mahmud over the covers but fell short, allowing Mahmudullah to grab the catch in the deep. As the tailenders were not needed, David Miller (34 not out) and Marco Jansen (1 not out) kept the scoreboard moving.
Bangladesh Already at Their Fourth Loss
During the powerplay, fast bowler Jansen wasted no time in getting to work, dismissing the first two batsmen for Bangladesh, Tanzid Hasan (12) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (no score). The middle order for Bangladesh then imploded, taking them from 30-2 in the seventh over to 58-5 in the 15th, making it seem unlikely that they would score 100.
Mahmudullah scored an outstanding 111 runs off of 111 balls to help his team reach 227-9 before being caught at long-off by Gerald Coetzee (3-62). His three World Cup centuries account for half of Bangladesh’s total World Cup hundreds.
South Africa’s death bowling was their weakest link; they had similar problems against the Netherlands and England, and Bangladesh was able to post a more respectable total thanks to this.
Bangladesh’s lower-order hitters struggled to build a large partnership as they needed 172 runs from 36 balls. Coetzee knocked out Nasum Ahmed for 19 with a catch and bowl, while Kagiso Rabada got rid of Hasan Mahmud before Mushfiqur Rahim fell to Lizaad Williams.
Player of the Match: Quinton de Kock
Quinton de Kock scored 174 runs off of 140 balls, making him the match’s most valuable player. In an interview with the press after the game, he said he was more exhausted than pleased with the team’s performance as a whole.
De Kock, too, is ecstatic that the team won a point. Thinking back on his 150th One-Day International, he admits he was nervous. He congratulates Heinrich Klaasen on his outstanding performance and says he has had a major impact on the World Cup.
