Australia’s 309-run victory over the Netherlands in Delhi was the highest ever in a Cricket World Cup match and the second-largest in ODI history.
The Netherlands had a tough time facing Australia’s pace bowlers after Glenn Maxwell hit the fastest century in tournament history off of just 40 balls, and they fell to 47-3 in the powerplay before wrist spinner Adam Zampa concluded with his third consecutive four-for.

Quick Recap: Australia vs Netherlands
When the Dutch lost their final five wickets for a total of six runs, they were bowled out for 90 and fell from 53-4 to the bottom of the World Cup standings, while Australia maintained their fourth-place position.
Maxwell was instrumental in Australia posting 399-8 after batting first after winning the toss. While Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62) added to the score, opener David Warner hit his 22nd ODI century, his second in a row.
Bas de Leede (2-115) had the costliest spell in One-Day International history after the centuries, while Logan van Beek completed with a four-for after removing Maxwell and Warner.
Australia’s Taking Off After a Shaky Start
After a difficult start to the tournament, Australia has won three in a row to regain its footing. Short ball from Van Beek (4-74), misplayed by all-rounder Mitchell Marsh (nine), collected by Colin Ackermann at cover. As the Dutch bowlers battled to break the stand, Warner and Smith steadily added 132 runs off 118 deliveries, bringing Australia’s score to 160-2.
Aryan Dutt (1-59) bowled Smith out with a back-of-a-length delivery that was sliced to backward point shortly after the right-handed batter got his first fifty of this World Cup. After reaching his century, Australian opener David Warner was dismissed by Van Beek, who took four wickets, when Dutt caught his paddle shot at the fine leg.
Then, in the penultimate over, he got two wickets to finish Maxwell’s spectacular effort, with Sybrand Engelbrecht catching him at long off. The next ball, Mitchell Starc (0) was out when he hit Van Beek over cow corner, and he was also sent back to the dugout after a catch and error by Ackermann.
Pat Cummins: Proud Captain
In a fitting climax, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins (12) smashed the penultimate ball, a delivery from Van Beek, through deep midwicket for four.
Australia’s captain, Cummins, is overjoyed with the team’s performance and says as much in the postgame presentation. He gushes at the batsmen’s effort to rack up a big score and the bowlers’ tight delivery.
Cummins agrees with the general consensus that Glenn Maxwell played brilliantly throughout his record-setting innings and that he deserved to hold the record. Taking wickets during the powerplay is a priority for him, and he promises he won’t lose that confidence in the following matches.
Player of the Match: Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell, who scored an excellent century, was rightfully named the match’s Player of the Match. In the postgame interview, Maxwell says he didn’t expect to have such a spectacular innings. A strong base and perseverance are stressed throughout his words. Maxwell thinks his confidence will skyrocket after his knock.
As he points out, when runs aren’t coming regularly, questions begin to surface. With a total of 400 runs scored and less than 100 scored by the opposition, Australia’s performance was nearly flawless. Maxwell said the team’s promising showing in the event is due to their strong play both with and without the ball.
