Off 50 balls, Kohli reached his 70th ODI half-century, and Gill scored his second of the competition.
Gill was dropped attempting to drive Madushanka in the air for eight in the fifth over, but the ball sailed past the grasp of a diving Charith Asalanka at backward point. Kohli was dismissed on 10 in the following over when a caught and bowled opportunity off Chameera appeared to be too challenging.
Despite coming close, Kohli was unable to catch up to Sachin Tendulkar, who has scored 49 tons in ODIs and holds the record. India’s top order was decimated as Kohli hit another off-cutter from Madushanka straight to Nissanka at short cover, resulting in a score of 196-3.
After much effort, Chameera was rewarded with the wicket of KL Rahul, who was caught by Hemantha at short extra cover. With the dismissal of Suryakumar Yadav, who gloved behind Mendis, Madushanka accomplished his five-for and became the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.
Sri Lanka Bowled Out by India
The top five Sri Lankan batters combined for a grand total of two runs, the lowest total for any men’s ODI innings. As fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Nissanka lbw for a golden duck and Siraj dismissed Karunaratne lbw, they got off to a terrible start.
Another wicket fell in the same over, this time to Shreyas Iyer at third slip off a wide delivery from Siraj that had lured Sadeera Samarawickrama into a sloppy hit.
The only Sri Lankans to reach double digits were Maheesh Theekshana, Angelo Mathews, and Kasun Rajitha, but Shami quickly dispatched the middle order and swept up the tail. The fans at Wankhede Stadium erupted in joy as Madushanka’s slog sweep of Jadeja was caught for a top edge. The ball then soared beyond Shreyas Iyer at mid-on.
